Frequently Asked Questions

What is sleep training?

Sleep training is essentially giving your child the opportunity to learn how to develop self soothing skills and fall asleep independently. How we fall asleep at night is one of the most important factors in creating healthy sleep habits. Did you know that no one truly “sleeps through the night?” We cycle through several sleep cycles throughout the night, and at the end of a cycle, we partially wake up. Most of us fall right back asleep into a new sleep cycle. However, if your child falls asleep while eating and being rocked, when they wake up at the end of a sleep cycle, they will likely cry out and want to eat and be rocked back to sleep. By giving them the opportunity to learn how to self soothe and fall asleep independently, we allow them to develop healthy sleep habits and build a strong sleep foundation.

What changes should I expect to make around my child’s sleep?

Creating healthy sleep habits is so much more than just picking out a sleep training method! Your child’s sleep is a big interconnected wheel of moving parts, and we need all of the parts working seamlessly together to end up with a great, little sleeper! In addition to choosing a sleep training method, we will be looking at your child’s sleep environment, soothing routines before bedtime and naps, as well as the timing of their sleep schedule.

How early can I start sleep training?

Typically, around 5 months is a great time to start sleep training. Some babies will be ready a bit earlier, some might need a little extra time. We always base age off of the estimated due date. If your baby was born prematurely, you will want to calculate their adjusted age to determine if they are ready to start sleep training or not.

When is the best time to sleep train my child?

There is no magical “right time” to sleep train your baby! The best time to do it is when you are ready. Sleep training often doesn’t work when parents aren’t fully ready to commit to the process. Teaching your child how to sleep takes effort, time, and patience. When you feel ready to make a change and commit to improving your family’s sleep, that is the absolute right time to start the process.

Can I continue to breastfeed while I sleep train?

Absolutely! Breastfeeding and sleep training can coexist in harmony together! Whether your want to wean night feedings or keep them, you can still have a great independent little sleeper.

Can I keep feeding my baby at night while I sleep train?

Yes! Whether your baby is breastfed or bottle fed, you can keep those night feedings. Please know that you don’t have to choose between teaching your baby how to sleep and keeping those night feedings - you can have both!

Will there be crying?

Probably. Whenever we change something in a child’s routine, you have to expect there to be some form of protest. Before language develops, crying is a child’s primary form of communication. We are making big changes to their expectations around sleep, so, in the beginning, they will protest. But guess what? The crying won’t last forever, but their ability to sleep independently will! Also, it’s very important to know that we NEVER ignore needs (ex: hunger, pain, sickness, injuries, etc).

Is sleep training right for my family?

I offer several different sleep training approaches for all types of family values and beliefs. I do not believe that sleep training is a one size fits all solution. I will individualize your sleep plan to fit exactly what your family needs and wants. That being said, at the end of the day, you have to decide what is going to work for your family or not! If sleep deprivation is stealing your joy of parenthood, impacting your marriage, or interfering with your productivity at work, think about what is best or right for your family. Teaching your child how to sleep is one of the most important investments you can make, and they will carry that healthy sleep foundation with them for the rest of their lives. Whenever you’re ready to take that jump and dive in, I’m here to support you!

Can you guarantee this will work?

While I can’t give you an absolute guarantee on how successful you will be, if you are consistent and follow through with the plan, there is an extremely high chance of success. Babies and children thrive off of structure, known expectations, and consistency. Stay the course, be consistent, and you will be amazed at the changes you will start to see.
